wheels outdoors

I got a Clay Boss, slightly used, in fantastic shape, like new. I put it
in my gazebo outside. Its mostlyly protected from the rain (though some
splashes on the legs if it rains hard), but the heat apparently got to it.
The plastic pan warped badly after sitting out there through the month of
June (in Florida). Other than that it seems to be holding up well.

The ONE bad thing I hate about my clay boss...the splash pan...it's cheap, thin and not at all like all the better wheels. Warping makes it only worse but I know you can buy a replacement. The brent's ( I have 1 clay boss, 1 brent and 2 soldners) don't fit but I read creative industries is coming out with a better splashpan.

Hi,
I am new to this list and tried sending this message and didn't see it
appear so, i'm sending again, hopefully it will only appear once!
The reason for my post is because this is the first i hear ppl using the
Clayboss wheel and i need to know about the noise/hum factor of the wheel
when in use. I have not been able to find any reviews that touch on the
noise factor...I hesitate to buy this wheel because i've not been able to
actually see one in use.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.
I understand that it will not be as quiet as the Shimpo Whisper VL,... i
am tempted to buy that one cause its only $350 more and it is really very
quiet...
Reason being that i will be using the wheel in the basement right under
where my family do their evening relaxing stuff, music, books, TV, and i
am concerned that a wheel that makes too much noise will interefere with
their quiet time...
Thankyou in advance for any help you can provide
Anne

I'm so happy to hear something/anything about the Clayboss wheels... I was debating whether to purchase one of them as my start-up wheel. My biggest concern is that since i've never actually seen one operate, i have no idea how much noise/hum/vibration to expect... I've not had any luck finding any mention in any reviews...

Having seen the Shimpo Whisper VL, i'm tempted to pay the extra $350 and get that. Reason being, it will be in the basement just below where my family relax in the evenings and i think too much noise/hum would be putting them out and interfering with their quiet/music/tv...I have been trying for weeks to find a second-hand wheel, but have finally opted for new...

So, CLayboss or Shimpo?... Decisions decisions. Any light you could shed on the noise factor for the Clayboss would be greatly appreciated,

Thanx,

Anne

Hi,
I own a CI wheel, 1/3HP with the big table attached bought 5 years back. I
do like the big table space and initially the sound didn't bother me.
But sometime back I checked out other wheels like the shimpo and Brent and
realized that my CI is loud. Not so loud that everyone in the house knows
I am throwing on the wheel, but loud enough that I cannot hear music
clearly on my stereo.
I am used to it, but if I were to buy my next wheel, I would research more
into the noise factor.
Charan, my 2 cents

Anne,

I own a CI clayboss and will say a noise is there but not all that
loud. I often just have to turn the volume dial up just a tad on quiet
music (symphonies etc). My husband has never complained about the sound
it gives off while watching a movie or playing music in the room next
to it. I tried a Shimpo Whisper at a friends place a few years back and
it was eerie that I got no audible feedback from the wheel. I was and
am still used to hearing how much pressure I am putting on the wheel
when centering and slowing it by pressing on the clay. I doubt very
much that the wheel if running in the basement will interrupt your
family's quiet time upstairs.

Just remember the extra $350 could be used to buy an even bigger or
better kiln or for more clay because once you start it's awful hard to
stop.

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to all the people who replied to my posting about the wheels. I think i've done a bit of a u-turn and am now looking into a Thomas Stuart wheel , the Legend, after some great recommendations off-list from helpful potters!!

I am now 1/2-way home as the question of the kiln might still require more thought....

Thanx,
Anne

I have the Pro version and love it. Pop for the SSX upgrade and you won't be
unhappy with the wheel. I kept it out on our screened in porch during all
kinds of weather and as long as I kept a cheap tarp over it and unplugged it
when I wasn't using it I have had no problems.
