Dear Clayarters,
I was looking through some of my old papers today for something else and
found a recipe given out by Val Cushing at a workshop I attended in =
March of
1984. Copious notes were given out about slips and engobes as well as =
terra
sig recipes. This was dated before I went to NC to work at the JCCFolk
School and I can't recall where I went to see his workshop. =20
It is called Soldner's Fusable Engobe for Raku
"Kaolin (EPK or Tile #6 34
Flint 33
Gerstley Borate 33
=20
Copper Carb 50
Red Iron Oxide 50
You get the Ghost Track Shadow pattern white line around the brushed =
area."
Bringing back my own memories of my sawdust firing, my ghost was an ecru
color, not white. Please make a note of this. =20
Hope this helps. Now if I could only find the paper I was looking for =
in
the first place.
Regards, Bonnie Staffel

I was told, many years back, the reason for the "white" line around the
brushed area is due to some of the flux migrating into the clay body,
sealing the surface to a limited extent, preventing carbon penetration from
the post-firing reduction. Perhaps adding additional low fire fluxes to the
recipe might re-enforce this effect.
In any case, I would expect the engobe to change to a brownish color over
time.

Jim, the additional amount of oxides is correct to be added to the base as I
posted originally.
In my own "black marking" (which I call my recipe) has the oxides only with
the addition of the frit to give it more melting qualities.

Subject: Re: Soldner's halo slip Attn: Bill Schran
Bill , your email on Soldner's Slip shows 50 % of copper carb and 50%
for
Red Iron Oxide Is this correct or am i reading it wrong.? Based on a
100 gr batch i would add 50.0 grams of each ot the oxides?
Thanks jim in Denton............
