Hey all.
I remember being completely enamoured with a glaze called "Stokes" back in
college. I've scoured the web databases without luck, and none of my
notebooks hold the magic formula.
Anyone come across this gem?

I only wish I remembered more about it, it was a cone 6 or 7 reduction that
took colorants really well. I remember with cobalt carb it was this
beautiful purple with tiny blue spots. It will make me nutty looking for it,
and I can't remember the simplist ingredients in it. But if someone can put
something together, hey... I'm there.

Hi Amanda,
I know this is a crazy thought but ... how about trying to recreate
it if you don't have luck turning it up ?
I've never tried this, but it would be a fun educational experiment
to try to list all that you can recall about the glaze and then see if
we can get close by redesigning it from scratch.
If you're up for a shot at it give us some details and we can take
a shot. Might be fun, though expect some testing, perhaps quite a bit.

Hi Amanda,
OK so this is a bit thin to start with but ....
So if its cobalt with flecking blue on purple maybe that might =20
suggest that the amount of cobalt was small and that it was not very =20
finely ground and perhaps unevenly dispersed - so cobalt oxide rather =20
than carb, and not much of it. The purple in this case would suggest =20
MgO in the glaze, so you'd be thinking dolomite, mag carb, talc, etc.
Any of that ring a bell ?
Next you'll need to think whether it was transparent, glossy, =20
matte, satin etc. How old was the glaze ? what feldspar do you think =20
it used, or was commonly used at the studio in question, what clays =20
did you use in glazes, and what claybody was it commonly used on ? And =20
what do you mean exactly when you say "that took colorants really =20
well." ? BTW did you ever use it with iron and if so what kind and was =20
the iron colour somewhat muddy ? What was the likely boron source as I =20
rather think it probably had some - GB, colemanite, frit ?
Thx
D
