need "buttery" cone 6 base glaze

I am looking to find an off white base glaze that will be similar to Rhodes 32. I don' t think Rhodes 32 would work so well at cone 6 and, especially using porcelain, which is my clay body. I understand it requires a high iron body to look nice. I'm also firing electric oxidation.

I tried several to date, one was Boris' Satin matte from a Clay Times recipe. It's nice except it's too matte. There's a nice yellow blush to it and it's what I want but the surface is so flat and thin, I want something with a bit of a sheen and better hand feel. Rhodes 32 has great hand feel, very smoooooooooth. I also tried the White Bird Matte from the archives here but it is just way too flat and too white.

Is there any way I can change this recipe (Boris' Satin Matte) to make it a lil better? I'm thinking adding some silica will get me more gloss but it already has a good deal in it. Any ideas?

Is it the dolomite in Rhodes 32 that gives the buttery feel? I think I read that somewhere.

Boris' Satin Matte

Kona F-4 feldspar 15
Gerstley 9
Whiting 22
EPK 30
Silica 25

Rutile 3

Thanks,

Tracy Cooper

Hi Tracy,

According to Insight your Boris Satin Matte has an alumina/silica
ratio of 5.92 which brings it definitely into quite matte. If you
want more of a satin matte you are into the area that Daniel has
demonstrated is more in the 8.00 area. So.

>Boris' Satin Matte
>
>Kona F-4 feldspar 15
>Gerstley 9
>Whiting 22
>EPK 30
>Silica 25
>
Rutile 3

0.86* CaO
0.03* MgO
0.03* K2O
0.07* Na2O
0.00* P2O5
0.12 TiO2
0.46 Al2O3
0.11 B2O3
2.72 SiO2
0.01 Fe2O3
Calculated LOI: 15.84
Si:Al: 5.92
SiB:Al: 6.15
Thermal Expansion: 7.12

Here below I just substituted wollastonite for whiting and adjusted a bit.
There has been a lot of talk about how wollastonite is an excellent
substitute for whiting because it doesn't have the loss of ignition
that whiting does.
Silica went way up although I didn't increase it in the recipe.
It is almost exactly the same in all other areas. Lower COE looks good.
This recipe probably has a much better chance to be in the buttery realm.

12.00 F-4 Feldspar
9.00 Gerstley Borate
28.00 EP Kaolin
26.00 silica
3.00 Rutile
26.00 Wollastonite

0.84* CaO
0.06* MgO
0.03* K2O
0.08* Na2O
0.00* P2O5
0.13 TiO2
0.46 Al2O3
0.11 B2O3
3.59 SiO2
0.01 Fe2O3

Calculated LOI: 6.76
Si:Al: 7.81
SiB:Al: 8.05
Thermal Expansion: 6.52
Formula Weight: 339.29

But just because my little bit of experience has shown me that
petalite gives a glaze
a wonderful buttery feel, I have re-calculated your glaze again to
give you again almost the
same chemistry but with 10% petalite as an ingredient:

Boris' Satin Matte ^6 less matte, with wollastonite and petalite:

26.00 Wollastonite
25.00 EP Kaolin
23.00 silica
12.00 F-4 Feldspar
10.00 Petalite
9.00 Gerstley Borate
3.00 Rutile

0.80* CaO
0.05* Li2O
0.05* MgO
0.03* K2O
0.07* Na2O
0.00* P2O5
0.12 TiO2
0.46 Al2O3
0.11 B2O3
3.59 SiO2
0.01 Fe2O3

Calculated LOI: 6.15
Si:Al: 7.86
SiB:Al: 8.09
Thermal Expansion: 6.43

Best,

Eleanora
