Arthur:

You missed the joke in my post.

Not sure if you are in the USA or not, but there are several books that =
are put out every year specifically with the purpose of stealing money =
from and stroking the ego of those included. One such book is entitled =
something along the lines of _Who's Who Among American High School =
Students_. The company that makes the book sends out a nice, colorful =
and glossy promo packet to the parents that says, "looky here, your kid =
could be included, just send $250 (or whatever the fee is) and we'll =
hook you up." On the surface, they make it sound like your kid is =
something special and is being honored by being "allowed" to be included =
in the book. As such, it is not really a Who's Who of important or =
distinguished people, but a who's who of those who are nuts enough to =
waste that kind of money. On top of THAT, I think they have to buy =
their own copy of the book if they wanna see it.

The promo I received, in the form of email spam, offered to honor my =
fabulousness by including me in the book entitled _Masters of Art_, IF I =
would pay them $750 for the privilege. =20

Hmmm...now that I think about it, for $750 I can be a Master of Art (you =
KNOW if it's printed in a book, it must be true!) No crits, no late =
nights, no commuting.....lemme think about this some more....o darn. I =
have to use that $750 to get the calendar printed, so it will have to =
wait until next year's edition.

Hey Lisa,

I think you should offer them an 1" square
advertisement space in the calendar for a mere $1000.

These sorts of books are vanity publications.
They offer the glory of seeing your work in a
full-color hardbound coffee-table book, just
like the big-time artists, and they generally
imply that all serious big-time artists (like you!)
ought to be in it. Of course, any artist with a
fighting chance of being in an actual glossy
book (for free) isn't gonna pay to be in this thing,
so it will be full of artists weighted about equally
between the naive, the mediocre, and those
who are both. The fee is hefty, since none of
these books will ever be sold except to doting
relatives of those included, and the fees must
defray the entire cost of publication as well as
the profit margin of the publisher.

Logan, that'd be a GREAT deal, (especially since a certificate weighs =
less than a book, and therefore would cost less to ship), except that I =
have to use that $600 (and then some) to get the calendar printed. So =
I'll have to pass for now. Thanks anyway! :)
