I have missed most of this discussion, so hope I am not repeating anything. A while ago I saw on either the History or Travel channel a show about shipping in ancient Greece. One small coastal town had a small mountain created by broken pots, not sure if they were amphorae or jugs. When the filled clay pots arrived, as I recall, with oil, as they emptied them, they would break up the pots and throw the shards on a pile that became a mountain. The commentator actually bent over and picked up a handful to show that's all there was underfoot. I found it facinating, but then again, I am easily impressed.
