walker pugmill question 2006

Folks:
If one of you (I'm sure there are hundreds) out there has a Walker
pug mill, would you please give me a shout off-list? I've searched the
archives to no avail. (Lots of posts about Walkers there.)

I need the name of the manufacturer of the gearbox used. =20
The tag on mine is corroded. I have the numbers, but not the mfg name,
and Google has been less than helpful in cross-referencing by number.

Not the motor, I have that (Reliance). The gearbox itself.

Part of my rebuild of this beast will be a re-documentation of the =
machine,
including photos before and after, part numbers, manuals (when I can =
find
them) supply sources, etc. I do that with all machines I own, then file =
the
info for use later if needed. It has come in handy, since my memory =
gets
more and more "selective" as time passes, and CDs are cheap to burn.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Wayne,

Hey, my walker gearbox is becoming a tad noisy, and from what I have found
out so far, I'm thinking it might be best to just just rebuild it, or have
a machine shop rebuild it for me. It's just a transmission with bearings
and shims and shaft and gears and such. (these thoughts since I have to
find a direct replacement, though Grangers has some that look close, but
for big bucks)

I might be barking up the wrong tree though. I've rebuilt auto
transmissionsin the past, so maybe-------?

Just thinking-----

Do you check the oil level regularly? Gearmotors like the one on the Walker
should last through your lifetime and the next owner's lifetime if the oil
level is maintained and the oil is changed once every few years. If the oil
level drops down so that it is not coating the worm gear and bull gear, the
gearbox will fail quickly. If you are lucky, the only problem is in the
bearings and seals, and if you have rebuilt automotive transmissions, you
will have no trouble with a simple gearmotor. If the gears themselves have
gone bad, there's little point in trying to rebuild it.
Good luck -

My gears were bad because the previous owner had tried to run it with dry clay in the barrel. A local machine shop ordered the replacement gears and rebuilt the gearbox for me for a fraction of a new gearbox. So it may not be a total write off.

I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone that posted in response to my
request for information. From what I can tell, there is no "one" gearbox
that was used, or, so many years after the fact; many have been replaced.
Ah well, the search continues, and so does the rebuild. My thanks again to
all.

Best,
