Hello Judy: I envy your being able to participate in the Celadon festival.
I was in Gangjin two years ago on a study grant from the Jerome foundation.
The Celadon Museum and research institute is truly amazing in it's depth and
scope. The museum has some great celadon pots but the real strong point is
the research into how they were made. Much of the museum is dedicated to
anceint kiln furniture and shards as well as analyse of the celadons.
Gangjin is a site where the famous Koryo celadons were produced. The
research into the wood fired kilns was of great interest. They have
excavated old kilns and have constructed working replicas of the ancient
kilns. Makes me drool.
I think that you will find the rural nature of Gangjin also a relief. Slow
paced and very friendly with great hospitality. I was there in June so
there was no Festival, very quiet. Being the only westerner for many miles,
I was a great curiosity for them. Sometimes mobbed by school children,
calling me Santa Claus. What a hoot!
Anyway enjoy the mountain top view.
