Hello all,
Thank you to those who helped in defining English China Clay vs Grolleg. My email requesting additional to IMERYS gave the following response; What I have learned is that English China Clay is now a generic term and if your bag doesn't specifically identify the contents, you should not assume that it is Grolleg.
Imerys produces the following ENGLISH CHINA CLAYS;
Super Standard Porcelain
Standard Porcelain
Grolleg
NSC
Remblend
Treviscoe
Grolleg
My friend has two bags only labeled as Imerys Quality China Clay and no mention is found on the bag for which type of china clay is contained. It does not behave as previous Grolleg purchases. She doubts that it is Grolleg. I will contact her supplier today and in an attempt to clarify this further.
Please read the response from Imerys below
Thanks
Rick

We produce in excess of 2 million tonnes p.a of various Kaolins/Ball Clays
for numerous applications, to assume English China Clay is solely Grolleg
is therefore not wise.
Based on the information given we are not in a position to tell you/your
friend whether they are in possession of Grolleg or not, the matter should
be taken with
whoever supplied you with the product locally.

Dear ECCI,
I see on you website that you produce a variety of china clays:
Super Standard Porcelain
Standard Porcelain
Grolleg
NSC
Remblend
Treviscoe
A friend recently purchased from an American supplier, a bag of Imerys
Quality China Clay" but no mention is made of Grolleg, which was her
intended purchase.
"Please, tell me if this bag is infact Grolleg and if not, what the
properties are and where to locate Grolleg here in New England.
I would appreciate learning more of the variety of kaolins that you sell
here in USA. Here in the States we have, like you, several types of kaolins
and I believe that some potters here think that if it is English China Clay
it can only be Grolleg.
Thank you
