peggy remembered and spooze

Hi, Vince,
Such good memories of Peggy...always willing to answer "newbie" questions with warmth and compassion, despite what she had to endure. Is there a scholarship in her name? I would gladly contribute to it. She was a very special potter.
RE: spooze.............is this a close cousin of "magic water" which Lana Wilson brought to light back in the 90's or at least that is when I first read about it in her book. I have used "magic water" ( I know it has to have some other name, but that is the one I am familair with) and it worked very well for cracks, etc. I had a bowl that cracked in four places(leather hard stage) and instead of throwing it away, I worked on the cracks and fired it ( both bisque and glaze firings) and lo and behold, it's still with me on my dining room table, brimming over with apples. :)

It was the dear late Peggy Heer that originally posted the spooze recipe to
Clayart. The following message is a distillation of a very informative post
by Jason Palmer earlier this year.

I have been using Peggys "spooze" to fix cracks and as my slip joiner for a

stuff seems to work a bit better if I boil it for a few minutes after making
it. I discovered this as I was trying to boil off some water to give me a
thicker slip. I started working with it and it worked a lot better - less
cracks, faster working, the whole works. I am not sure at all why - it just
seems better and for now i will leave it at that. maybe someone else will
know why.

Here is the recipe for Peggys spooze if anyone would like to try it. It's
wonderful.

1/3 parts dry clay powdered....any body...preferably the one you are using
with no grog
1/3 parts heavy karo syrup
1/3 parts white distilled vinegar

A drop of hydrogen peroxide to keep it from spoiling...it will bubble for a
few minutes and then settle down. if you dont add that the sugar goes bad
and smells awful in about a day.

I boil mine at a high rolling boil for about 5-8 minutes...let it cool...and
put it in a container.

May I please have the recipe for magic water? Someone brought some to
the pottery studio where I take classes and I used it. It works great.
How different is it from spooze?
