Hi Craig, all...
Well, maybe some are better than others.
Tried the one here, comeing home after long hot
Summer dusty day looking at old Car parts in a 134
degree metal shed out past the edge of town,
driving
with a friend in his car, hungry, passing a
'Hooters' my pal said lets try it, so we did.
Totally fatuous and ridiculous place...very
limited menu, food was stale, meager portions
and low quality, smelled bad even. I just pushed
the plate away...other patrons looked like
baby-pink college
imbesciles fresh from jock class guffaws and
shoveing matches.
Some cute babes working there, not far from
normally clad, our waitress comes
over, sits down in the chair next to me, asks me
whats the matter ( not that I was pouting or
anything, or maybe I was? ) and I say "This food
not only looks bad, it smells bad...surely,
something is very not-happy here...I think Helen
Keller could have cooked a better Supper just
working with what she could find in a vacant
lot..."
...she laughs, says, "Yea...the food is not very
good here..."
I say, "What do you eat when you eat here?"
She says, "I do not eat here..."
I say, "Ohhhhhhhh..."
She says " Well, sometimes I get a little thing of
Celery sticks..."
I say, " I probably should have ordered that, do
they soak 'em in 'Veg-White' do you know?...
She says, "Hmmm...I will
find out...but
really, I do not need to eat much anyway...so I
usually wait till I get home..."
I say, "Well, you know, it is not difficult to
have really good food, AND cute-wiggley
babe-waitresses, asaide from whatever ambience,
all at the same time. It is not
as if they are mutually exclusive, at least not in
my own cultural up-bringing, unless it is some
sort of 'post-modern' corporate-policy kinda
thing. Say, do you ever see any Hooter's
Stockholders in here, eating, I mean? IF they
could
find their mouth with-a-spoon, and if so, do they
say anything about the food, or do they ever check
up on their investment?"
...she says "No...never seen any that I know
of....uhhhhh, are you some sort of
Scientist or something?"
I say, "Maybe, whats it to you?"
Anyway, we had a nice little conversation
thing...visited for maybe twenty minutes. I really
liked her. She was born here in Las Vegas, was
pretty bright, looked like the original ' I Dream
of
Genii ' gal only better, was married, 30
something, had kids, liked waitressing night-shift
cause it
payed better than whatever her school degrees had
gotten
her otherwise, left her days free, and it was an
easy gig that let her
be socialble or not as she saw fit...even if it
was absurd...and she had decided that the broader
workplace and culture were absurd ( or worse)
anyway, so...
...the food WAS horrible and neither me or my
friend ate any of it, the atmosphere was
average-suburban-bar-stupid. I told her to give
the plate of food and the bill back to the cook
with my compliments, but I left her a nice-enough
tip to
acknowledge she had done a nice job walking it
over to the table and so on...
Went back a week later...on a Wednesday, by
myself, the place is
dead-as-a-door-nail...different waitress this time
but I remember she'd been near bye the last time,
comes over, I sit outside on a little quiet area,
said "I think I will have a nice
Glass of Water please, no Ice..."
...she said, " Would you like something to eat
also?"
I said, "Uh-uh, I tried that here last time and I
will never make that mistake again..."
She said, with a look of somehow indicating she
could totally understand that, "How about a Beer
then?"
I said, "Well, thats mighty nice of you,
sure...since you put it that way..." ( I was
thinking of getting a Beer anyway...)
She brings the bottle of Beer, on-a-napkin, and
leaves, guess
her shift ended or something, and I read a book
for an hour, R.D.Laing I think or maybe Otto
Rank or something...never saw a bill, so maybe she
meant it. I
leave a sensible semi-George tip, and go home...
Oh well...whatchagunnado?
Moral of the story?
Not sure...
Seemed like a nice place to read on the
off-nights when there were no customers otherwise,
where the outside seating was, where you could at
least get away from the perennial canned music
blareing 'inside', if in nice evening Weather, if
you did not mind really limited beer selections of
the most mediocre brands...and are allright with
absurdity.
