Michael...does this coating prevent absorption? I have used particle board
bats for years and like the absorption feature, but have to be careful about
scraping bits of the board when I clean off the remainder of clay after
removing a pot.

I also use the small canvas squares for mugs and small bowls. I let them
totally dry out between uses and when I'm ready to use them, do a quick
swish through my throwing water and pat them onto the particle board bat.

Ann,
That is why they last so long
and don't warp.
Also, Tony mentioned that he has a hard
time matching the pins to the holes.
Even on large bats, I have just gotten
a sense of where the hole is and can
fit them on without much trouble.

There is a rather "inelegant" yet surprisingly simple method to making
sure one can find the hole (in a bat...shame on you!)

Draw a line in pencil across the center of the two bat pin holes on the
underside of the bat*. Where that hole hits the outer edge of the bat, take
a small rat-tail bastard (a round file, don't ask me, that's what it's
called) and file a slight depression into the edge of the bat on each side.
Voila'! Even a busy potter will be able to determine orientation of the bat
to the pins now.
