If any of you have never seen a Walker Pug Mill, are simply curious, or
contemplating a rebuild of yours.
I just finished posting pictures of mine. Stripped to parts, then rebuilt
from the ground up.
Pictures are posted on Shutterfly, here:

Now Wayne, what's with the fire engine red? That's NOT an accurate "restoration".

All joking aside for a moment...
I love bringing old machinery back to life; I got that from my father who
loved to "tinker" with things. And while I didn't "need" another pugger, I
just couldn't pass it by. Some of you will understand that. I will say that
when it's all totaled up, I could have bought a brand new de-airing pug mill
(with freight) for about what I spent. But that is not the point.
I hated seeing it sitting there behind a building, covered in leaves, with
plants growing from the clay that had been left in it. Like going to a
convalescent home and seeing someone's grandparent sitting by themselves in
a corner, ignored and unloved. Sad. A sad "ending" for a machine that is a
true workhorse (after all, how many machines are designed to take that kind
of abuse, and last 40+ years?) The machine still had a lot of life left in
it.
Never mind the color choice . I've already gotten "loads" from folk that
think I should have put it back to the original factory grey. But having
lived here for the past 20 years, I can tell you that there is too much
"battleship grey" in this town. Too many folks worked for the Navy and
"borrowed" paint over the years. You see it everywhere...cars, boats,
houses, lawn furniture. No artistry, no imagination, BORING! I would have
preferred teal and black, but I couldn't find a shade of teal that I liked
in a spray can. Yeah, that's right. It's Rustoleum (gasp!) Colonial Red
from a SPRAY CAN (horrors!). Three coats. It will be covered in mud soon
enough, I expect.
The only hand rubbing happening is on my back when I try to move it by
myself With any amount of luck, the machine will outlive me.
Best,
Wayne Seidl
who at 12 painted his bedroom lime green and black...to the horror of a
certain apoplectic, yelling parent who made me repaint it IMMEDIATELY...so I
did...screaming pumpkin orange Yes, really. I don't think they ever
forgave me, or understood how much I "dislike" beige.
