Kelly--

I have only wood and salt fired 6 times, so I am not an expert in any way.

However, I have experimented with different clay bodies. Here is the list

Standard 205, 181, porcelain
Amherst Z, T-1
Miller 510
Highwater Clays (my favortie)
Aurora
Trina buff
Zella Stone
Loafer=B9s Glory
Craggy Crunch
Orangestone
Woodstone
Moon white

As far as Highwater is concerned, there are pictures of tiles on their
website that are fairly good, (better on a Mac) at showing what comes out o=
f
wood and salt.

Standard 181 has more silica and is termed as a clay that is good for salt.
Two years ago there was a question of dunting, however, it seemed to hold
up. It dunted for me 3 years ago, but 2 years ago, it was OK.

With the exception of the white clays, I usually let the kiln take its
pleasure on the outside surfaces of the clays. White clays will often be
white in salt firing, unless you use a flashing slip,

There are so many people here, much more experienced than I.

I did do glaze testing with the High Water Clays in wood, salt, and cone 10
reduction. If you are interested in seeing any of that, I can send photos.
