hank's kiln for sale

this reminds me of the story of my cousin
that had a transmission repair shop...big one.
12 mechanics.

i was over to pick him up one day for lunch..and he was
livid. someone had just run over a very expensive
tool he had just purchased for about 400 bucks.
bearing puller.
`shop tool.`

it is funny how folks take care of `shop tools`.
they belong to the shop.
so.
kick them around, leave them under a car, run over them.

look in any mechanics box in that shop.
big red tool box, the best tools, all lined up
and polished. nothing ever missing...don't even
think of touching that box.

but, shop tools are run over, dirty, kicked around.

same is true often for institutional kilns.
oh well, someone else paid for it, we can
do whatever we want...don't worry about it.

things get ruined.

that is why i say so often...get your own kiln.
don't depend on others...and when you get your
own kiln....`don't let anyone use it, or fire it, or
borrow it.`

our farm kilns get basically loving care.
the group knows...if you abuse the kilns
you will no longer be welcome at hay creek.
abuse a hay creeker, you are gone forever.
abuse the tools, you are gone.
abuse mel...well, we can talk about it.

nothing makes me bristle like going into an
institution and seeing the equipment abused.
`who the hell is in charge?`
mel
i have not seen the penland kiln, or know any thing about
it...but/./
hank's kilns are a piece of art and craft...beyond what
anyone can imagine....it should last forever...with care.

Thanks for the reminder........ the kiln I installed at Shadbolt Arts
Centre in Vancouver BC went 10052 firings before maintenance/ relining
was needed. It will go another 1000 easy, because the folks there love
and relish the kiln and take great care of it.

Thanks again, I was too shy to point that out............ nahhhhh!

I am correcting that to read 1052 firings! 10052 firings would likely
be a world record........

Mel:
Then don't ever come down here to the ceramics department at Florida Keys
Community College. I'll hear you screaming way up in Maine. I might even
fly down and hand you a 2X4.
Best,
Wayne

Is that where Jay Gogin teaches? He just came down here and
threw some great stuff in our class room this past month.
