paper bag sagger

I'm new at this - but this technique sounds very interesting. How
exactly is this done? If I put salt in the bag, does that have any
harmful effect on the kiln?

What are the results and benefits of using this technique?

Many thanks.

Deborah,

I only have a minute to write, but here it is in a nutshell:

The clay in the paper saggars seals the pot in whatever atmosphere you
provide via, salt, copper, ect. What you will end up with is an intact
(hopefully) bisqued bag of clay that you break open to get a pot that
has been fumed.

It's really important to make sure that the piece is totally enclosed in
the clay/paper mix...otherwise you will lose your atmosphere to the kiln .

I used this technique also to blacken large terra sigged pieces. (no
chemicals, just lots of newspaper and sawdust.)

Hope this helps.

Lori L.

If the bag is completely sealed and air tight, why doesn't the air expand &
result in an explosion?

Can I just add here, in case it hasn't already been added, that this
should be done in a fuel kiln, not in an electric.
