Irene,
There many ways it can be done. For several years I have been playing
with this. I think that if she wants immediate good results she
should get photos of her work processed into laser decals for
ceramic use.

The premier process is the Zimmer laser toner process which has
several imitators. To set up to do full color decals with this
process requires an investment of about 40,000 US dollars. There are
several shops that have set up to do it in the US and others abroad.
Urban Clay in Los Angeles has a lot of experience making big tile
murals using the laser decals.

There is a small shop in Kansas
That offers the Zimmer decals at a low price for as few as one of a
kind.

If her art is not photographic but graphic art where the colors are
possible to separate it might be better to use silk screen printing.
There are a lot of colors available - even gold. A separate screen
is needed for each color and the minimum order runs to a couple of
hundred decals..Bel Delal in Florida has a web site:
. There is a lot of information on screen
printed decals there.

For one or two colors you might want to experiment with ink jet
embossing using sticky ink. I describe how to do this yourself on my
home page
Also there is a .pdf there of a paper I gave at the Aomori Woodfire
Festival in Japan that describes a lot of different processes.

When you get into industrial processes there are ink jet printers
that will print directly to tiles. They are big and expensive.

Mayco has just come out with a great do it yourself kit called Line Art
Creative Images. The process is incredibly easy and completely foolproof.
There is no guess work as to which glazes, printers, transfer paper or
firing temperatures to use. Unlike all of the other information previously
published or mentioned on this listserve, this is a face up application so
no special graphics programs are required to reverse the image. Check out
Mayco's website www.maycocolors.com for distributors and also project
ideas and instructions.
