Hello all!
Has anyone out there successfully built and fired a train kiln with only
hard fire brick? I would love to hear any advice you might have on the
subject. More specifically, has anyone built one using 13.5x6x3in. hard
brick?
thanks, Jeri Dopp

Jeri: I don't know of any other kind of train kiln than a hard brick one.
Some may have softie or fiber lids but they are mostly hard brick. This kiln
is an ash machine and would eat up and spall softies up front of the kiln
like no tomorrow. My kiln chamber is 13.5 inches thick of hardbrick.
You'll luv ridin' trains.
Best,
Tony

Hello Tony!
Thanks for the note on train kilns. I attended the wood fire conference at
NAU and enjoyed your presentation very much, infact the entire panel was
excellent.
I have started building the train and have only hard brick so I am open
to any further advice you may have on the subject.
thanks , Jeri

Hey Jeri,

First, LUCKY!

Second, would you consider relocating to Rockport TX? I'd move but I
have chickens.

My advice is bug Tony as much as you can. Start out with bugging him
after every course of hardbrick, then up the dose as needed.

We would be very interested in seeing your progress with the kiln, how
you build your throat, will you have a lid or door, etc.

Bon feau

Taylor, in Rockport TX

Hello Taylor,
Thanks for the post! I am taking pictures as I go and will be happy to post
them so everyone can see the progress.
So far the only thing completed on the kiln is the cement pad, so it will
be a while before I have anything worth taking a picture of.
You are right, I was lucky to get the brick and they are beautiful !
take care,
Jeri
