For an undergraduate ceramics course, I'm currently doing research into
side-fired vessels on individual/one-time use tripods (dragonfly eye/horse
eye). So far I've fired 10" vase forms on their side using an American
shino glaze with wood ash, borax, copper carb and iron oxide (about a
6:3:2:1 ratio on those, respectively) on the 'top'. The results were fairly
successful, in fact they were quite a bit better than I expected.
Unfortunately I dont have enough studio time nor enough gas firings in this
term to do extensive testing so I'm asking Clayart: what fluxes and colorant
combinations should I attempt next? Any help, stories of past experiences,
warnings, or references to literature would be appreciated.
