groundhog firing

Looking for advice on firing a groundhog kiln.
I'm going to be involved in the first firing of a BRAND-NEW kiln based on
Reggie Meaders kiln. And it's here in Maine. I've worked with anagamas,
catenary, and train, but never a 'hog, so I'm wondering if any out there
have, and could share their experiences. This kiln features a monster
firebox and really wide chimney, so I imagine holding it back will be the
trick. No shelf dampers, only passives. 120 cu ft ware chamber. We are
NOT going to salt, but rather aim to go for three days or so, sustain
cone8-12 for a good 36hrs, and go for some of that natural ash glaze. Any
info shared on this subject will be met with great appreciation. Thanks.

Hi, Jesse,
The Bolick Family Pottery in Blowing Rock NC would be a great source to contact for info on groundhog firing... if their schedule is the same, they started the kiln the week of Thanksgiving and just had the "kiln opening" on Thanksgiving Day. A tradition of theirs. They have an awesome groundhog kiln. Lula Owens Bolick is a fifth generation Seagrove Potter who moved to Blowing Rock with her husband Glen and set up pottery shop years ago....Lula a former NC Folk Artist of the Year as well. Wonderful family - website too......not sure, but it may be www.bolickpottery.com...or do a google search.
Good LUck with the firing!
