advancers or nitrite-bonded shelves question

I am getting ready to purchase some kiln shelves and don't know if:
advancers that are moisture sensitive and then blow up are the
same thing as nitrite bonded shelves.
I am clueless. Can somebody advise me on this. Are advancers and
Nitrite bonded shelves the same type?
I am living is a very damp place.

Hey Marcia!
Two years ago, I took out a home equity loan and
purchased fourteen Advancers. I don't know if they are
the same as the others, but they have lived happily
outdoors in coastal SC, and Seattle, without blowing
up. Don't let rain fall on them, but general humidity
doesn't hurt them a bit. Wadding doesn't either, but I
have actually found that though glaze and soda come
off easily, wadding sticks, so I no longer use it at
all. I mix alumina into my wax, hit the bottoms of
pots, soda at cone ten, and haven't had a problem yet.
I just finished paying off the loan, and would do it
again in a heartbeat. I love them. I love them. I love
them... Jules
PMS. The Advancer sales guys at NCECA were really
nice, as well. Great senses of humor.

Advancers are nitride bonded shelves, using a patented process of bonding
together the silicon carbide in a nitrogen atmosphere.

I noted that Advancer 12"x 24" shelves weigh a little over 9 pounds and will
cost about $120 each.

I checked Geil's web site and their 12"x 24" nitride bonded shelves weigh a
little over 11 pounds, but cost only $50 each. I think they be a bit thicker
than the Advancers

I don't know if this means the shelves from Geil, or any other supplier
might be more absorbent than Advancers that have a less than 1% absorption
rate.

I also noted that Geil now has nitride bonded shelves for electric kilns!
They are available for 23" & 28" kilns and are much less than Advancers of
the same size. This is certainly something folks with bad backs, or are
firing to ^10 and need a shelf to remain flat should look at. When I wrote
my article for PMI, Advancer was the only supplier with these shelves for
electric kilns.

Dear marcia;

Living in a damp place(Eugene OR) myself, I solved the absorption issue
by making a cabinet for the shelves which has a small light bulb
underneath to keep the shelves warm and dry. Advancers are the shelves
I use, and there are no substitutes as far as I am concerned. I should
say that I have no experience with the chinese versions.
