Margaret --

Three observations -- first, the school should be available to help you identify
how much computer you need for this purpose. Find out from them what
it is that you will need for the semester you'll be taking the class (some
blankety-blank schools change requirements very often). Then you know
what you'll need.

Second -- if you can make do with used; check with LowEndMac.com
for info on what's available and to provide you with some idea of what a
used refurb'ed unit will cost.

Third -- Consider the cost of a nice, new Mac Mini instead of a used computer.
The Mini is only $600 if you don't need to burn DVD's and if you already have a
suitable monitor (display), mouse and keyboard.

Hi,

I am not lurking but appear to be since nothing I send gets published but
here goes again.
I have returned to college now for 1 semester and will be taking
''Computers for Art'' next Janurary and it will involve using Apple computers, not an
area of my experience so far.

I will be learning Photoshop .I am wondering if anyone has an Apple
computer they no longer will need [like getting an upgrade for the holidays?] that
they would sell reasonably, AND CAN SAFELY SHIP?

as I only have dialup, and a usb 2.0 port and a cd writer, all with no
problems.

Also, if anyone from the Columbia area of SC is going to NCECA and would
be driving I can navigate and split expenses and possibly split room -with
any ladies.

Thanks.

Margaret,
I would try someplace like http://www.powermax.com or Ebay for a
used iMac. I teach Photoshop CS on 15 iMac 350's and they work fine.
Most have 256 megs of memory or more and 80 gig hard drives. These
can be had for under 100.00. They don't have USB 2.0 but USB 1.1 will
work for most plug in devices except video editing.

There's also a list of current places selling used/refurbished
hardware at
MacSlash | Sources For Older Apple Hardware?

Steve Slatin's suggestion to get a Mac Mini is a good one. It's a
good computer that will last a long time. Size of a pocket book, more
powerful than a two year old Powerbook.

Check dealmac.com for deals or specials.

Good luck

The following URLs will take you to product offerings from some vendors
of used and/or refurbished macintoshes online.

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/bargains/
http://store.apple.com (look for the link under Special Deals for
"Refurbished products")

and for new macintoshes, there's (to name but a few):

and of course the Apple online Store:

For any recent version of Photoshop (eg, 7, CS1, CS2) you will want a
reasonably fast processor (eg, the higher end G4 (1.4 Ghz or faster
processor), or any G5 systems as used computers, or any of the new
Intel macs). More importantly, if you're going to edit even moderately
large photos, you want a lot of memory to avoid the slowdown that comes
with swapping. I recommend 1 gig of RAM minimum for any system using
photoshop regularly. Its one of the few end user applications that
really benefits from lots of memory, and memory is fairly inexpensive
these days.

if you do get an older apple, make sure that it is can handle the
version of photoshop that you are using. I have an older blue & white
G3 that chugs along nicely with photoshop 5.5.
But I think that it would cringe if I were to upgrade to a more currant
version. conversly if you are using an older version of photoshop, I
do not think that the brand new machines with OS 10.4 run any
program that was written for OS 9.

Millie,
I do most certainly appreciate that wise advice and will keep it in mind.I
have not found any Apple computers.

They will.
You can have OSX and OS9 (now called "classic") on the same computer.

I have an iMac flat panel running 10.4, but it also has OS9 installed.
I just have to turn on OS9 to run it.

No, Classic will not run on any of the Intel-bases Macs:

The very newest with Intel chips, the newer iMac, MacBooks, MacMini
and Mac Pro, no longer run OS 9 because of their chipset. They do
however run Windows, if that is of interest. (Best thing to do if you
want Windows is to get it pre-installed or bundled at someplace like
MacMall, otherwise you pay full price for the package.)

You can still buy non-Intel Dual G5s, G4s and older iMacs with
Motorola/IBM chips that will run OS 9 but they're no longer being
manufactured. It was a controversial change but most people are quite
happy with it.

The latest controversy is archivability of formats. Will you be able
to open your pictures or look at your old email twenty years from
now? Will you even be able to access the media you save them on,
either because the physical reader is no longer available or the
media is deteriorated and unusable. Not like having your photos in a
shoebox, more fragile than a piece of unfired clay.

Thank you for all the great input, Kathy. That reminds me that I need to
download all my pics on my present PC, and I should know better than this as
each preceding computer died and buried my digital family photos.gulp.
