shimpo pugmill question...

Hey all,

I bought a used Shimpo Pugmill NRA-03 (made in 1979) recently and use
it once a week for pugging reclaim. I noticed about 1 or 2 weeks ago
that there is oil coming out of the gear box. I know very little to
nothing about motors but believe that an oil leak is a problem.

I do have the instruction manual and did a search on pugmills from the
archives but no mention to what to do about oil leaking.

So some advice is what I am looking for here and possibly a direction
to look at.

Thanks in advance.

We had one of these Shimpo pugmills, never a problem, unless the clay was to
stiff.

I'd first suggest simply tightening all the bolts on the gearbox.

If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the gasket.

Contact Shimpo for the part.

Lori,
Gearboxes can leak if the seals get old.
First check the gear lube level. There
is usually a plug about half way up one
of the sides of the gear box that is
opened whenever the lube level is
checked. The lube should just begin
to spill out of the plug hole when the
plug is removed.
If it is low, add more by removing the top
vent hole breather plug. clean up around
the hole carefully so that you don't get
dirt in the gear box.
Fill with the recommended lube until
it just crests the check hole.

Now on the subject of leaks:

If the leak is slow enough, I would
not attempt a repair. It takes a high
level of knowledge and skill to replace
spring loaded lip seals of the type
used to seal the shafts on gear boxes.
Just monitor and maintain the lube level.
An easy way to determine how
fast it leaks is to place a catch can
under the drip site. Weigh the can
first and record its weight on the
outside. Now you can weigh it on
occasion as the lube fills it and know
right away how much lube is left
in the gear box. Discard the Lube
that is lost and replace it with fresh clean
lube.
Every few years you should change lube
and the best time is when the lube is warm
after a long pug run. Then it flows faster
making the change go quicker and the
metal wear contaminants are still in
suspension. I have seen these gear boxes
last 30 years under hard use if well
maintained.
