jim, i think you are very near the truth.
again...observation.
if my clay, as i stated this morning in a post
on bloating...seems to be layered, or not well
mixed....i get separation and a bloating like
appearance. not good.
i think that many potters cannot tell the difference
in cracking, bloating, shivering and icky stuff.
they are all flaws.
and, we hate them.
bloats are really awful.
so saying that:
mix your clay well, wedge it well, cut and slam
a dozen times....if you are doing anything at all
with the addition of other kinds of things...sand, grog,
etc. double mix.
high iron clays add another layer of fault finding...esp
with heavy reduction.
we all have to get better at identifying
and knowing what fault we have, then
fixing it.
mel
(i don't mean farting in church like wayne does.
we cannot solve that fault.)

Hi Mel,
I'll "2nd that" for sure. Got to be especially diligent
when mixing additions into a claybody to help prevent bloating.
Best wishes,
Jim
