Dear All,
Let me ask a couple of questions to this interesting ClayArt discussion group.
During my PhD studies, I have been thinking about the differences between art, craft and design methodology to be used within research also develop our knowledge both in practice and academic area within ceramics fields.
So far, what I know there is no university offer PhD in Crafts, all ceramic major PhD research is undertaken within Design or Arts fields. Through my experience, the methodology and necessary learning process in art, craft and design are somewhat differ from each other. Most of industrial ceramic designers dose not necessarily have a deep knowledge and skill in ceramic practice while ceramic artist and craftsman require those.
Unfortunately many university abandoned ceramic craft or ceramic art as an independent department within university which now become a part of art or design department. Student numbers are decreasing too since there is not much options for them after university education. It makes more difficult conduct a research within craft.
I wonder, have you any ClayArt members working in universities ever been thinking about those? I also wonder what universities outside of UK or Nordic countries offer PhD major in ceramic art, craft or design?

Dear Jeoung-Ah Kim,=20
Perhaps your answers will come from those who teach Arts, Crafts and =
Design at Tertiary level. The most experienced person I would suggest =
from an Australian Perceptive would be Dr Own Rye.
I believe he works out of Monash University in Victoria, Australia. He =
is also acknowledged for his contribution to distance education in the =
field of Ceramic Arts.
I hope this give you some direction.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
Redhill,
South Australia.
