this topic was on another pottery board a while back. police were found to not re-sell their scales gained in drug raids. they did not want to have any make their way back into the old drug weighting useage.

those of us that have taught high school know to
keep those scales locked up, or bolted/welded to tables.
drug dealers use them to weight out illegal drugs.
they get confiscated in drug busts.
so.
they are just around....and the police have them.
call any police/sheriff station...ask them, and they will
direct you to those that have them.
and, don't assume if you live rural, that they
won't have them.....man, the country folks have
a lot of police action.

There is a website for police departments to auction their excess items. Its called Propertyroom.com. I ordered my triplebeam scale, and paid $25.00--it works great.
I took a quick look today, and was dazzled my all the diamond rings, but I'm sure scales can be found.
Good luck

Yep. Dope dealers and ceramists use triple-beam
scales. (Like us, they work in precise gram
increments.) When they get busted, their goods
are confiscated, and sold at police auctions. I
am actually one of the few people I know that
didn't get their scale at a police auction, but
the person I got it from did get it that way.
They aren't necessarily cheap, though, as the
auctions are a well-known source, and all the
new start-up dope dealers are there along with
the new start-up potters bidding for a set of
scales. Last I checked, $100 was a typical price
in my city. Still cheaper than new, though.
Policies vary a lot across the country, though.
Some places (so I've heard) apparently give them
away to upright citizens with ID, while others
have them destroyed outright. (Scales, not
citizens.) You'll need to check locally. It may
be worth calling nearby cities, too, to see if
their policies (or prices) differ.

Hi Gang,
Another good place to get scales is pawn shops. I got my Ohaus triple beam for $70.00
I also sold two pieces of pottery at the same time & was allowed to leave a few cards in the place as well ! Pawn shops often have more than one scale like the one I went to & are usually happy to reduce inventory a bit. At least all the ones I've talked to have said that. I don't need another scale but I keep an eye out for other potter friends of mine I know might in the near future.
Just my $ .02
Happy holidays all !

I'll put my two cents in on this subject. I recently purchased a triple
beam, used, on eBay. I did a "Buy it now" for $60 plus shipping rather
than wait out the auction process. I did a history of similar auctions
afterwards and found that I overpaid as they had been going for $40 to
$50. They seem to be listed quite frequently.

oh okay. I did have a good private laugh at the thought of walking into a
NYC police station and saying to the desk sergeant "Do you have any triple beam
scales I want to make ceramics!"

I looked at propertyroom.com just now and found no scales, but a search on eBay turned up plenty of triple beam scales.

Cindy,
Pawn shops are also a place to shop for triple beam scales. That is where I
got mine - for $35.00 - it is almost like new.

Hello,
up here the police has the scales seized from dope
dealers
auctionned.
Check with your local police force to know what
they do in
area once the trial is over.
You may then save at least on the shipping costs.
