Hi Stephanie,

A friend recently returned from New Zealand with some really lovely pottery.
Too big to carry with her, she had it shipped, and there you must be
careful. The packaging etc was perfect, but Canada customs extracted more
than she was expecting, much more, hideous amounts. One piece was a
particularly fine ash glazed platter, entirely decorative. But because it
was described as platter it was classed as functional and taxed accordingly.
Maybe if it had been called wall hanging or artwork it might have been
different, maybe not. Worth checking with customs to see what categories
pottery comes in and which attract the highest taxes. They do vary quite a
bit. Perhaps US customs are kinder. Canada customs has a big book of
codes which they are often reluctant to show you .. Or buy small and
carry.

Hi Stephanie,
I visited NZ in 2004 and spent some time on both islands. Pottery-wise I
would definitely recommend the following:
- Nelson at the northern end of the South Island has a fabulous and well
organised potters group, the envy of many other organisations I suspect;
- Peter and Jeanette Shearer (47 Radiata Lane, Birkenhead, Auckland) do
wonderful slipcast work with lots of imagination;
- Driving Creek Pottery (http://www.drivingcreekrailway.co.nz) on the
Coromandel Peninsula, North Island is well worth a visit, quite unique.
I am sure that you will get plenty of other recommendations as well, but
these are my pick.
I also echo what Brian Gartside says, get a car. It is by far the easiest
way to get yourself around the place. Many hire companies offer packages
where you have a car on one island, drop it at the inter-island ferry, and
get another on the other island.
You will love NZ, it is samples of the best bits of the world all rolled
into one little package.
Regards,
Graham

Hi Stephanie,

We, too, visited NZ in 2004. Because of limited time we just stayed on the north island. As previously mentioned by another potter, the museum in Auckland is unbelievable...don't miss it! The Art Deco town that someone else mentioned is on the east coast of the north island and is the town of Napier. It is pretty remarkable and has a great public pool/hot tub where we met some friendly Kiwis. Napier is also in the middle of NZ white wine country and there are wine tours available. We went on one with a guy named Hamish in a small Toyota van and had a great day. There were only 4 of us on the "tour" so we felt like we were on a ride with friends.

Too many stories to recount!

If you want more info/photos, email me off the list!

Francine
