i have placed a picture of our wood fired
kiln at the farm.\ click below/clayart page

you can see the fine detail of the chimney/stack.

after firing it the first time, donovan felt we needed
a few more rows of brick in the stack.

you can count bricks in the pix...so you can see
we have ample size. note new brick near the top.

i loved david woofs post about location.

that is why i use the term.
`large and adequate chimney`.

if you give a recipe for size....or height...it will be
wrong. each kiln has to be sized for the work
load of the potter, the air flow around the kiln, and
the location as to barometric pressure. rural, urban,
trees, hills, mountains, ocean. who ever knows?
one size, never fits all.

as in:
all jockey shorts are size 30. eeegad.

finding brick is always a challenge.
if you are going to have bricks delivered to
you from kentucky, and you live in northern washington state,
remember, the delivery cost will double your price (or more).
buy local. have them haul them to you if you need a certain
style and name of brick.

always check with tim frederich...he sells brick and supplies....
often he has some real bargains....off colored brick, etc.
tfrederich@hotmail.com (tim is the former editor of pmi magazine,
and a great friend of clayart. (and me too.)
i know he can get anyone a full pallet of ifb's at a very good price.
the big problem with brick delivery...you need a loading
dock...those trucks cannot just drop 500 brick in your
drive way. always make arrangements with a factory, school
or someone that has a dock...then you can make a few runs
with a trailer to your kiln site.

hauling brick is not fun...so have help...our farm description
of the `most beautiful woman in the world`....`pretty, strong and sexy
and can carry 8 hard brick at a time`. that comes from the day
that dawn, tara, colleen and kerry where hauling brick for our new wood
kiln...now that is four beautiful women. and, i can carry two at a time.
whowowhoooo.

remember, if you are building any kiln....place expanded metal
on top of the concrete blocks...lift that kiln into the air. let the bottom
breath.
