Am in the process of making some paper clay. Am using a premixed wet
stoneware clay, but am wondering if I need to let it dry completely, then measure
the weight, or is it possible I can weight it as it comes out of the bag.
Want to make about a 25% paper; 75% clay.
Would appreciate any tips. Merry Christmas to all, from San
Antonio, Texas. Paul

Dear Paul,
Paper clay is usually mixed by volume so don't dry out your clay. It
is easiest to mix in a slurry.
I use a Soldner mixer. I pre weigh my ingredients for the body recipe
and mix dry in a trash can. Then I use the right amounty of
water...for my batch it is usually 3 inches in the tub. Next I throw
in the previously blenderizered and then squeezed dried balls of
paper pulp according to the volume I am mixing.
Then I start adding the dry mix to this. I keep adding dry mix until
it is the right consistency for my taste.
If you are mixing a small batch, get the clay into a slurry but
remember what the volume was before you added all the water. Then add
a wod or two for 25% volume. Eyeball it. Dry this out on a slab of
plaster or whatever you prefer to use. I have used paper linter
shredded and beaten until oatmeal like consistency.
I have use toilet paper. I have used newspaper, office paper, and
cellulose insulatiom. They all work.
Hey, I am in Brownsville, TX..down South to you northerners in San
Antonio.
