Actually, short of legislation which will force emails to be
authenticated OR to charge a penny per, there is nothing we can do to
stop them from sending these scams. NOTHING.
For one thing, these addresses are easily spoofed, and the addresses
can be abandoned once used.
And I'll bet anyone lunch that 99% of these originate from Russia,
Nigeria, or some other law-free, renegade email top-level-domain or
countries (.ng, .ru, .ro, .ae, .cn, etc.)
Reporting them to spoof@paypal or abuse@bankofamerica, et al, will
only guarantee receipt of yet another useless piece of email from
them telling you how to protect yourself.
The ONLY thing we can do to protect ourselves from these things is to
NEVER follow a link to anything that requires you to login and/or
provide identifying information. So, if Bank of America sends you
something AND you have an account there (DUH!), go to their page
directly in your web browser and login as usual.
Of course, paying close attention to the URL (web address http...
something) is always a good practice, and I would say it's a
necessity; it's a jungle out there.
Wayne's advice to use different email addresses for different
purposes is sound. I have one address for eBay, another for PayPal,
a third for Schwab, etc. And I have those addresses "whitelisted" in
my spam filters so that they're never marked as junk. Anything
claiming to be from eBay, PayPal, etc. that does get flagged as junk,
therefore, IS junk and I never see it.
And, to say again, any email address used to post messages on clayart
is guaranteed to be harvested by spammers/spoofers and be used within
weeks of first appearance to send you all sorts of scams. So it may
behoove you to use a more disposable email address for your clayart
posts. Which is why I'll be using momud5 pretty soon. My permanent
(well, more durable) email address will always be "mud" at the same
domain.
Celia and I will be driving down to Tucson for a week or so to visit
with our cousins and escape from the distractions around here, so...
I hope you all have a great holiday and healthy, happy '07.
Best,

most scams and emails can easily be stopped. Governments do not want to =
