I think I know in which green glaze the head was dunked. There's a
putrid green in the NMSU clay studio called "Mean Green."
When we look at our own work, we see all the little "flaws." I wanted
it to be bigger. I wanted it to be smoother. I wanted it to be nicer
than it came out. Some of these flaws are real and help us to improve
our skills. Some are flaws only because the finished item doesn't look
like it did in our heads when we dreamed it up.
I don't have my clay teacher's style. She doesn't have my style.
There's value in both styles. Sometimes, when we compare our work to
the work of others, it's like comparing a pair of shoes to a bird in
flight.
Or.... did you ever think that maybe that young man on the next wheel
is looking at your work and wondering how long he's going to have to
sit at that wheel to be able to throw something even half as good as
what you're throwing?
