olympic kiln relay failure

I have an Olympic Kiln model 2723E (electric) that is about three years =
old. It
has been through about 100 or so firing cycles and yesterday suddenly two=
of the
three electric relays failed. Has anyone else ever encountered relay =
failures
like this? It seems like the relays should last longer than 100 firings!

Thanks for any info. - Sue

One of the relays went on my Amaco/ Excel after about 50 firings.

Yes. Not on an Olympic but an Evenheat. Ruined 12 five piece place
settings in a bisque. This has taught me to always time the last hours
of the firing to a time when I will be there to watch it.

Sue --

Relays, expensive or cheap, rarely go bad on the same day EXCEPT
when there's a serious power surge or overheating issue or
something of the sort. It's like the fuel injectors in a modern
car engine -- if one goes bad, you may get angry at the manufacturer.

If 3 go bad on the same day you presume the problem is a really,
really dirty tank of gas.

Best wishes -- Steve Slatin

I have an Olympic Kiln model 2723E (electric) that is about
three years old. It
has been through about 100 or so firing cycles and yesterday
suddenly two of the
three electric relays failed.
----------
Are you sure the relays actually failed? They may have
stopped working due to a disconnected wire.

When you replace the relays, check the wires for tightness.
Are the push-on wire terminals discolored? Do you see heat
damage around the terminals? Are the wires loose?

If push-on terminals show signs of overheating, it is best
to replace them along with the relay. The push-on terminals
lose their spring tension when they get too hot.

Actually, the person at Olympic thought that only one had failed, but =
there was
damage around the other one so we wanted to replace it. The plug between=
the
top and middle section melted and fused together and I don't know if the =
relay
failure caused that or that caused the relay failure. The plug between =
middle
and bottom shows some heat damage, but it did come apart. We're =
replacing both
plugs too.

The wires that go into the kiln look okay and I don't think they were =
loose, but
I'll check on that.

The terminals look okay too. It was recommended that we connect the new =
wire
below the old terminals - is that a good idea?

There was also damage in the main plug too - one of the prongs was black =
and
partially melted and the receptacle damaged. That had been a problem for=
a
while - I noticed the plug getting rather hot. We replaced both the plug=
and
receptacle. =20

The heat from the plug may have traveled through the wiring
to the relays, causing them to fail.

I am not sure what you mean by connecting the new wire below
the old terminals.
