Hi All,
I recently bought a 20 year old Crusader 294S kiln without the manual. Is
there anybody out there who still uses these kilns and has the manual, or
knows how to get one? I called Amaco 3 times, but they have not replied.
Thanks.

Vaishali,
Up until two or three months ago I used one of those old Crusaders for
years. No manual though. I found the the kiln to be excellent. There was
no timer and no kiln sitter.- only the control switches for each teir of
elements. I would sit a witness cone on a post by a peep- hole, and
plugged a pyrometer into the kiln . Between the two, I got excellent
firings. Actually they were the best firings I have ever had with any
kiln I have owned. I always fired with the bottom vent plug or peep
hole open. I only fired to cone 6.
There is a place on the net where you can order all parts for a
Crusader. - elements, replacement bricks, switches, Can't remember the
name of ti Maybe someone in the group can come up with the name. I think
they are in Canada. I believe they also advertise in CM and Pottery
Magazine.

I have been firing a Crusader 274s for twenty years. Believe it or not I fire to cone 10. It 's an excellent kiln. When the kiln sitter broke I didn't fix it. I fire with cones only, two sets at the peep holes. As with any kiln, practice and experience gives the best info. Keep good firing records to consult for what went well and what went poorly. When I unload I take notes about what glazes did on each shelf and record measurements between each shelf. I've been able to learn how to load and fire so that I get the exact same results on the very bottom of the kiln that I do on the top shelf.
Keep trying Amaco. In the past I've had pretty good service from them but lately less so. Don't know why.

(who's anxiously looking forward to her maiden firing of her first ever gas kiln - hopefully in the next few weeks!)
