Hi all!
My name is Erin Joy. I'm new to the list and to the pottery world. I am
excited to have come across this resource site and community. There is so
much helpful advice and information, I've been reading for a few days now
and still just on the tip of the iceburg!
I started getting into pottery last year and, you know, I've never been
happier in my life. I am planning on studying for the next few years and
hope to become a potter...
First on my list of big purchases is a wheel. (I have an electric kiln
already). I've been reading a lot in the "wheels" section to get an idea of
what is popular and reliable. I've settled on a Shimpo VL. There is a
company in NY state selling them for a fantastic price and I am drooling to
buy one.
Thing is, I'm worried about shipping and warranty issues. I live in
Ontario, Canada. And getting it here is no mean feat. I will pick it up at
the border myself (saves a heck of a lot in shipping fees!). The company
says if something goes wrong I have to ship it back to them on my dollar.
There seems a hundred things that could go wrong between delivery and
working out the kinks at first (pedal adjustments and any fine tuning)to
long term support, but a $500 savings from buying locally is hard to resist!
Has anyone had any experiences they might share about cross border purchases?
Any feedback or advice would be much appreciated! :)
Erin Joy
