Hello all;
It’s easy enough to punch in a recipe and get 3 sets
of numbers (unity, wt % and mol %). I always have a
hard time distinguishing one from the other. I make
glaze calculation infrequently (about 100 in 3 years)
and I have not learnt how to do calculations by hand
nor a foundation glaze course. I learnt my glaze from
coming in the middle instead of the beginning – going
straight to glaze calculation with the computer in
addition to reading (a lot!) on my own. I had a couple
of glaze workshops that were made for experienced
potters, and there was imaginary peer pressure not to
ask obviously basic questions at the workshop. What is
the trick to read / verify the numbers (from one
author to the other) if I am not familiar with
different formats?
___1 - Is ‘mols’ (page 57, Pottery Glazes by David
Green) the same as mol % (from the Glazemaster
software)
___2 - From readings off a computer, is mol % how you
describe molecular formulas? (e.g. K2O 0.2 in the flux
column)
___3 - In Mike Bailey’s Oriental Glaze, is % analysis
equal to wt %?
I got the answer to question 3 a few years back and
now I completely forgot. It is hard to retain the
information if it is not used often enough. Every time
I pick up a new book, I am disorientated. I am tempted
to learn the manual way just to familiarise myself,
but there is always something more interesting to do
instead!
Some glaze number recognition tip would be
appreciated. I got my notebook ready!
Sincerely
May
