Another question for those more experienced...
I am currently firing oxidation cone 10 (will be moving down to cone 6
later), and am looking for a glossy base glaze formula that will accept
most Mason stains, especially those needing a "zinc free" recipe.
Is there such a base glaze, or is zinc mandatory for a gloss?

Hi Floyd,
Zinc is not necessary for a gloss glaze. Look in the clayart archives
for an appropriate glaze--there are lots.

Dear Floyd Hale,
You say << I am currently firing oxidation cone 10 (will be moving down =

Then ask <gloss?>>
Zinc is not mandatory in any glaze and excellent durable transparent =
glossy Zinc oxide free glazes can be used with ceramic stains, be they =
required for underglaze, in glaze or overglaze decoration. When you move =
to Cone 6 perhaps you would access recipes you might need by getting a =
copy of "Mastering Cone Six Glazes".
It is my opinion that the need for Zinc oxide is overrated and the =
purpose for its inclusion is misunderstood.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Hi Floyd,
There are at least five cone 10 gloss glaze recipes in
"The Potter's Complete Book of Clay and Glazes" by James
Chappell. Page 321 & 322 of the 1991 edition. Only one of
them has zinc in it.
