The links above will direct you to two pictures of pots that I made. I
really like the first one, but my toughest critique (my mom) HATES IT!!
Apparently she LOVES the second picture. I think it is waaaayyyy too dark.
It looks black when you're not shining a light on it. I really like the
first one because where it pools it is transparent green, and where it's
thick there are small yellow TiDiox crystals, and beautiful blue crystals
are scattered about.

I'm asking for your opinion because I am only going to keep one color.
Which one is better?

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris,

It's not which one is better---it's which one you like better. Why
are you only keeping one color? You should test both of them on more
pieces to see which one does more of what you want. One piece is not
a fair test of any glaze as changeable as a crystal glaze.

First question: are those 2 pictures of the same pot? I hope not, as they
look totally different.

I agree with your mom - I like the second one better. I'm trying to figure
out if the think the pot is too dark, or the photo. I think the pot looks
great.

Which brings me to point 3, which you didn't really ask for, but hell, I can
never shut up. The main reason I don't care for #1 is because, well, I just
don't like the pot. When using crystalline (which I admittedly don't do), I
think you need a much more subtle form. That big swirl in the middle of the
plate is too damn distracting, and the crystal pattern is very sharp. I
feel like the two are fighting each other, and no one is winning.

Regardless of what color combination you chose, you should consider using
the simplest forms possible. As with all "showy" glazes, the pots are
basically a canvas to show off the glaze.

Feel free to disagree.

Hi Chris,

The colors in the first pic are very nice. However, I think the crystals
in the second one 'blossomed' much more prettily. Can you play with the
first glaze when you are firing so that you get the nicer colors, but with
crystal formations more like the second glaze?

I know that the term "fairly new" means something different to everyone, but
you are growing some damn nice crystals, my friend. Also, kudos for sharing
and asking for critique. Many find it intimidating, and I applauded your
skill and your confidence. I especially admire your skill for articulation.
You were looking for opinion and not validation. Wow.

Keep up the good work, and please keep sharing your stuff.

Well, I basically agree with all of the comments. I think I prefer the first
glaze mainly because there are contrasting colors between the crystals and
the background glaze. I will go ahead and do some more experiments with both
glazes. For the first one, I want to try to make the colors a little more
'subtle', and for the second one (the darker one) I'm going to try to keep
the same tone of blue but just lighten it up a bit.
If I can do that I think I will be happy with both glazes, and I will keep
them both.

I am fairly new to pottery, and I KNOW that I don't have the best taste in
the world, so I really do appreciate all of the feedack.

My last two posts were a little redundant. I didn't mean to post both
replies. Oh well... Also, I have decided that it wouldn't kill me to
continue tests on both glazes. I'm just tired of it! I've done over 50
tests so far! I just got a new 20" plaster bat, and I made a bunch of
large platters to test the new glazes on. I know, a giant platter makes a
ridiculous test piece, but I'm beginning to realize that all of these
crystalline glazes are beautiful in thier own right. So, why shouldn't I
do tests that will leave me with a whole bunch of 'one of a kind' pieces?

The new tests will be ready within one week, and I will post pics as soon
as they're ready.

So glad I joined this forum last week!

Chris;

They are both spectacular! They both have unique characteristics and
colors. I've looked at them both many times and I can't chose.

Not much help I know. I would have to see both of them in person in natural
day light I guess. But from the pictures, they are both amazing!

Since they are so different, go with both. But if you really want to go
with one only, chose they one you like best.

Yeah, the links are a little messed up. The blue part of the link is
incomplete. You have to add the last few letters to the link and it should
work. Seems like the consensus is that there's too much going on in the
blue and yellow pot. I agree with that. And maybe the swirl is just too
much. I think the only problem with the darker one is that it's too dark.
I will try to lighten it up a bit. I REALLY appreciate all the input!

iglasgo on sat 20 jan 07

Hi Chris-
I like them both! If I absolutely had to pick one, I would pick the
lighter one, but that's just because I don't care for navy blues.

One thing I've experienced is that a pot can look very dark, yet show
up very light in a photo. I have some tiles glazed in a deep copper
blue, which are very dark in person. In photos, they are very light,
not at all how they look in person. I wonder if that could be
happening with the darker glazed plate?

Lynn,
I recall a Dick Lehman workshop that I attended --the story goes that =20
when Dick was in Japan one of their Natl.Living Treasures asked him =20
which of two teacups was better. Dick picked one of the two then was =20
asked why ----the answer Dick gave (which was the right answer) is =20
that the one I picked is the right one for ME

The darker one shows the crytals better and, in general, is more
aesthetically pleasing.
