Dear Clayarters:

One of my fellow students made a glaze last semester, following the
Persimmon recipe in John Britt's High-Fire Glazes. It produced a beautiful
red, quite different from the brown tiles shown in the book, and nobody in
class has been able to reproduce it. Assuming this newbie made an error to
this recipe (as opposed to a different recipe?!), any ideas on how to push
the color response toward a brighter red (this was not a tomato red, but
more of an apple red)?

Persimmon 1 (John Britt, Guide to High-Fire Glazes)
Custer Feldspar 52.5
Silica 20.1
Kaolin 6.1
Talc 6.1
Bone Ash 9.1
Gerstley Borate 6.1
Red Iron Oxide 8.5

It was applied thickly with a spray gun on white stoneware, fired in gas to
cone 9 with reduction.

Many Thanks,
Lea in Memphis
