safety concerns, dry clay, glaze, etc

I was just wondering when you guys wear your respirator masks. The only
time I wear mine is when I'm spraying glazes and when I'm vaccuming.
Should I wear it when I'm weighing out dry chemicals? I guess I'm just a
bit worried because my studio is carpeted, and it's an excellent place for
clay to nestle only to be stirred up and inhaled at a later time. I'd love
to get rid of the carpet, but a higher authority won't let me. So when do
you guys wear your masks? Also, I know silica poisoning is a pretty long-
term concern, but is it prevalent among potters? Just curious.

I wear mine whenever I'm cleaning the studio. That stirs up more dust than
anything.

As for the carpet ... might I suggest laying something over the carpet, like
cheap cut-to-fit linoleum? You're going to destroy it with clay.
