Judd: I know no real answer. Sorry about that. In small quantities in the
glaze the zinc acts as a not-very-powerful flux and you could make tests
using calcium instead. In larger quantities , ten, twenty percent, the zinc
not only acts as flux, but creates typical crystals affecting the surface
and the look--a particular skim milk white. In the larger quantities the
zinc also will have an effect on certain colors. The best suggestion I can
think of (no folks I do not think Judd will save if he changes to a zinc
containing frit) is to make blends and see how much calcium will replace how
much zinc without losing the sought after characteristics of the glaze.
