fixing old amaco 15 wheel

I have an old Amaco 15 wheel. The rubber gasket that the cone rides on has
fallen off. It looks like it was glued in place. However, I was recently told
that someone fixed this just with bearing grease. What keeps the rubber ring in
place? It hangs on the bottom of the motor so would fall off I think.

If I should glue it in place. What should I use?

Thanks for the help!

We had 8 of these #15 wheels in our school studio for many years.

I replaced the rubber drive rings on all of these wheels at one time or
another. Also replaced the belts, but that's another story.

The drive rings are held in place primarily by tension, like a tight rubber
band around something. Amaco recommended using Locktite, a liquid that's put
on bolts to help lock the nut in place. Every wheel I put the Locktite on
never had the ring come off again. Just put a few drops around the metal
flange where the ring sits. Don't use too much.

With wheel upside down, you'll need to stretch the ring over the flange on
the metal wheel. Then using a piece of wood to tap down with hammer to make
certain the ring is seated down and level with the metal wheel surface.

If the old ring showed uneven wear, you may need to adjust the motor
placement.
