sony cameras - important if you own one...

This is VERY important information for anyone owning a Sony Cyber Shot
camera. I had to discover it by accident. Apparently Sony does not
actively publicize it:

Certain Sony "Cyber Shot" cameras were manufactured with a defect
somewhere in their CCD devices. They will work beautifully up to a point,
then either stop working altogether, or begin producing a psychedelic-type
distortion in every image. My DSC-F717 made it three years, then went
psychedelic overnight. I was ready to write it off rather than pay the
$200 a repair on the three year-old camera would have cost.

Then I happened to see an announcement on the crawler at the bottom of a
TV screen that Sony had a huge recall on these cameras. I only saw it
once, and I watched the same channel for hours hoping to see it again, but
never did. If you have one of the defective models, Sony will repair it
for free.

Go to the Sony web site for more infoprmation, including a diagnostics
routine and a link to get a UPS shipping label to return defective cameras
to Sony. It took about ten days to get mine shipped off, repaired and
returned. No charge at all.

I do own a Sony Camera - cybershot DSC-W100. 8.1 megapixels. Love it.

I don't take my own pottery pics with it - I feel strongly that the camera
is only as good as the person behind it. I don't see in my own work what
the photographer sees. I can't photograph my work and don't try.

FWIW, the guy who did my new shots (which are more lifestyle, not product)
can't photograph his own paintings. He ended up going to my regular
photographer for his portfolio slides, which worked out great.

Dear Fred;

You have one of the best 5Mb cameras made, IMHO. My professional photog
friend has access to anything he wants to use, and that Sony DSC-F717
model is his first choice almost every time.
