I acquired a NIkon Coolpix 5700 from a friend that did exactly the
same thing... .worked fine for a while and then the display and the actual
images turned into weird distortions .
I luckily found a NIkon forum and posted a question about it
..and one of the forum-ites said that Nikon was having problems with
a sensor in some models and they also were doing the repairs at no
charge even if the warranty had expired... They sent me to the website
which had the " how to return " information ... and within a couple of
weeks, I had the camera back and working properly ...no charge...
so it apparently isnt just the Sonys ...

Hi Marci,

Just in case some of us have problems with our Nikon Coolpix camera, could
you please post the web addresses you referred to.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Veena ,
Here is the link to the return form...
http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/cp_service_form.pdf
It is a ccd chip ( whatever that is ) that goes bad and while I expected
a long repair delay , I had the camera back in a couple of weeks... and
no charge for the repair...
