Can those raku masters out there (: please tell me what they prefer to

Without claiming the title of "raku master", I have been doing & teaching
the raku process with my students for about 30 years.

Regarding the correct bisque firing temperature - much depends on the clay
body and the raku firing process you will be using.

You can do raku with any clay. I've even done it with porcelain (very slow
heating ramp). That said, most folks work with a coarse "open" clay body
that can more easily withstand thermal shock. The hotter the bisque firing,
the more fused the clay becomes and less resistant to breaking with a rapid
heat rise.

We do all of our bisque firings at ^06 - stoneware, porcelain, raku. This
works for us and seems a good compromise for all of our clays.

I've tested many different clays for raku firing, including most all "raku"
bodies. The best all around that I have used is Soldate 60, and it can also
be fired to ^10 reduction!.

I was a presenter at the "Raku Masters" workshop iin NC at Dan
Finch's Pottery.
And after 40 years of Raku-ing, I am still learning. But I bisque
anywhere from
^09 to ^04. It depends on what I am putting into the bisque to fill
it up. I like my big slabs at ^06,
