Patrick,
The first potter's wheel I ever built was made
for free from a Maytag dryer.
The old ones used a step down pulley that gave
me just the right torque and I used a 3 step
pulley to change speeds. The 1/4 hp motor
reduced 30:1 has about the same torque as
a much larger motor reduced only 10:1 and
throttled back with a speed control.
