paypal at shows?

Hi Clayarters,

I don't know if this is at all possible, so I thought I'd ask in case any
one has tried this....

I've got Paypal on my website and I've had no problems with it, and it's an
affordable way of taking credit card payments, (and without feeling ripped
off by a bank). I'm going to be doing a number of shows this year, including
some very large ones like Grand Designs and Royal Horticultural Society
shows, (I'm writing from the UK by the way), and I don't have a system set
up yet to take payment by credit card whilst at shows.

Now I gather one can buy a device called a Blackberry, (and no I don't have
one), which you can use to connect to the internet, check emails etc, whilst
on the move. Could this be a potential way to get around the whole credit
card payment expense? Has anyone tried this? Would it be too slow? Would it
work out as just as expensive in the long run as setting up an account with
a bank to take credit card payments? Any ideas, (particularly form the more
technologically aware among you!)? Many thanks,

Ama Menec, Totnes, Devon, UK.

Ama,
That is a very neat bit of sideways thinking !
A few years agoI did some big shows and enrered into a contract with one of
the hand held card readers ( like you get everywhere now)
It failed in its task, as some of the places I needed to use it hadnt got a
signal, presumably the same would apply for a blackberry.
Although now every garage and primary school has it's own mast , I guess
there is better coverage.
Good Luck,
Pat
are you a garden pot maker,?

It will work for sure. As long as you have a laptop with wireless
capability or a PDA with Internet/wireless access, it will definitely
work! Good idea. When and if I start doing lots of shows, it will justify
me finally buying a PDA. I love gadgets but have no need for them, but
now..................... Lisa

There is a feature with Paypal where people can pay via email on their
cell phones. Look at their web site to see the details.

Has anyone tried using paypal at a show via their mobile phone? I wonder
if it'd be quick enough at a busy event to have the whole thing completed=

before the customer takes the goods away? Actually my phone is hopeless s=
o
I'd have to replace it with something more durable, but it still may be c=
heaper
than buying a blackberry!

I'm making garden sculpture Pat, some of them life-sized, it's a whole ne=
w
venture in every way....I'm manically testing cone 6 glaze recipes for th=
e
outdoor work, and making new originals to cast from right now. I've never=

shown sculpture at a RHS event or anything remotely like Grand Designs be=
fore,
and most of my 'new stuff' isn't even on my website yet ( www.amamenec.co=
.uk
), as I'm still sorting out the glazes!

I thought I'd better start getting my head around taking credit card paym=
ents,
and not leave it untill the last moment.

For those wanting to accept credit cards at shows, you may want to check out
ProPay.com. Their prices are good if you are just starting out and not doing
high voume, and you can call in the card number with your cell phone and get
approval on the spot. I use ProPay but have started just knuckle busting the
card and calling in or using the computer to call in the sales after the
show. I know I risk taking a bad card but I've always accepted cheques and
it is the same risk. With ProPay though I can make the call if I choose.

I just noticed that Paypal offers a new service. Look at their
webpage. If you are in the USA and have access to the web, you can
accept creditcard payments by entering the buyer's credit card
information.

Check it out.
