Here i sit with books, diagrams, notes and pictures from others etc
on building a downdraft kiln. Bought some good used bricks and
burners. Got the slab poured and roof up and concrete block
foundation. For the block foundation we turned the blocks with the
holes facing up as per Vince's suggestion in his book. Next we put
cap block then, Durock layer. Ok, now what comes next? I am
supposing a layer of IFB (one or two layers?) then a layer of hard
brick??? Am I right? Then start the wall courses. OK, on the
bottom few wall courses what do I use...all IFB? Now, on my plans
that I am using they use the terms: Fire brick, fire brick
straights, k-23 straights, soft brick, hard brick. I'm confused but
isn't some of this the same thing? Well, showing my ignorance which
is embarrassing but thankfully I will have help with my first
firing! Help!

I have more questions but will save them for later.

Well I will help you on your confusion and maybe add a little bit more..;)

The K-23 are a 2300 degree soft brick.

Hard brick are just that the hard type of firebrick. They come in diffrent
types and hardness's

Now the straights are a shape of brick the standard is either a 9" x 4-1/2"
x 2-1/2" or 3" thick. But they can come in basicly any size as long as they
are rectangular in shape. You also can have Wedge, arch, key brick also.

If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask. I have a lot of
information and experience at my disposal on all types of refractory products.
