Ages ago I found a cone 10 glaze recipe called barium blue gold in an old i=
ssue of ceramics monthly, and I loved and used the glaze for years. We rece=
ntly moved, and my glaze notebook was damaged irreperably by the moving com=
pany (it was left in the rain for three hours, and now I have a solid paper=
block!) Allmost all of the other recipes I was able to recover, but this o=
ne was too blurry to read. It is a cone 10 reduction glaze with a rutile li=
ke blue background and gold spots. Does anybody happen to have the recipe f=
or this glaze??? I would be ever so grateful if anyone knew the recipe, its=
one of my favorites.=0A=0AThank you all,=0ACandy=0A=0A=0A =0A_____________=

I'd recomend forgetting about doing a "Barium" glaze in general.

Dear Dave Shirey

You tell us << ...I'd recomend forgetting about doing a "Barium" glaze =
in general...>>

Why ? What are the things you know about it that leads you to condemn =
wholesale a well researched raw material ?

In spite of proposals that substitute other Group 2 Elements for Barium =
Carbonate, that compound does give a unique character when it is used.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

Hi;
I did intend my comment to sound like I was "condemning" it wholesale.
Have you actually "researched" Barium? (see many previous Clayart postings on the subject, and MSDS sheets http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/B0348.htm)
For me personally, Barium glazes are not worth the hazzle.
Too many postings have already covered "barium" so perhaps it's best not to add any more.
Sorry I brought it up.

Dear Dave Shirey,=20

Had you said "I recommend being cautious....." I would have agreed whole =
heartedly.=20

Agreed, there is a lot of information about using Barium Carbonate. =
There is still a lot of research that needs to be done as well.
