white ash: seeing is believing

Howdy y'all,

Just in case anyone wants to see where I'm getting the white ash for
my korean kick wheel, some pictures are blogged at my wirerabbit blog.
It's not the pottery blog, but because so much of my life is starting
to revolve around pottery in one way or another...

I don't know if white ash is going to be a good wood for making the
kick wheel, but it is from my land and I would hate to waste it. I'll
get some nice planks out of that trunk too I think and I'll use them
in the house for projects if I can. This will be another great
excercise in patience as the wood needs to cure for at least a year,
maybe longer if I slab the heartwood at 6 inches for the wheel. If I
can find a turner around here I might get a rolling pin or two done
just for grins.

With all these other projects staring up on the Hendrix farm, I have
no idea why I took the time to clip my fingernails. Sigh, sweet clay
will have to wait.

Hey Taylor,

I don't know how heavy or open grained ash is, but you may want to seal
the pores of the wood or use something like minwax wood hardener to help
keep the water out of your wheelhead.

Also the same 6" center slab taken from the top end crotch of that tree
would probably have some very nice figuring that would polish up nicely
and make a really beautiful low table, ala George Nakashima or something
similar.
