Hi John (and everyone else interested),
On page 139 of your Complete Guide to High Fire Glazes, there is a photo
of your Goldstone aventurine glaze. It looks absolutely stunning! I love
the sparkle of the crystals, and its deep coppery color. The description
says you fired the photographed piece at ^10 in oxidation. My questions
for you are these:
1) Can aventurine glazes like this be done in reduction?
2) If I used your Goldstone glaze in reduction, would the high iron
content turn the glaze color black?
3) Is there a colorant that you know of that would give that beautiful,
deep coppery color (with or without crystals) in reduction?
I would love to try firing some crystalline and aventurine glazes.
However, right now I am restricted to using the resources and equipment in
my ceramics classroom. That means (for the moment) a gas kiln, ^10
reduction, and having no control over the firing schedule.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give me!
Take care,
Stephanie
